¤ 04 March 2007: Sydney FC depart for China before their first AFC Champions League match against Shanghai Shenhua. Sydney leave behind Dean Bouzanis, Jeremy Brockie, Terry McFlynn, Jacob Timpano and Ruben Zadkovich, whilst visa issues for Mark Milligan and Nikolai Topor-Stanley (with the Olyroos in Dubai) mean they will join up with the team one day late. [SFC][SMH]¤ 06 March 2007: New Zealand international Jeremy Brockie is released form his contract by Sydney FC for "personal reasons". He is ineligible to represent Sydney in the group stage of the AFC Champions League though. [SFC]¤ 11 April 2007: Sydney FC's match against Persik Kediri is postponed for one day due to the heavily waterlogged pitch at Manahan Stadium in Solo City. Officials' attempts to remove the surface water with what looked like a vacuum cleaner were futile. Set to be played at 3:00pm, the match will now be played in the morning heat at 10:30am. [AFC]¤ 12 April 2007: Sydney FC vs Persik Kediri, Manahan Stadium, 10:30am (AFC Champions League - Matchday 3) Sydney FC again take an early lead but fail to capitalise, clearly stuggling in the humidity of Central Java. Alex Brosque has an excellent opportunity to put Sydney 2-1 up on the half-hour, but goes down under the slightest contact when one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Ruben Zadkovich's second yellow leaves Sydney with ten men for the final 30 minutes, and they are unable to find the equaliser. [AFC][AFC]Persik Kediri 2 (Aris Budi 25', Budi Sudarsono 70') def. Shanghai Shenhua's goalkeeper makes several exceptional saves, whilst Ufuk Talay hits the crossbar from a wrongly-awarded penalty kick on 27 minutes. ¤ 29 December 2006: Sydney FC is found guilty of " multiple breaches of the Player Contracting Regulations", warranting a fine of $259,000 and a three-point penalty. The fine was reduced to $129,000 and the points deduction to two (although the previously suspended one point penalty for an earlier breach was activated) in light of the Sydney FC board's "co-operation and full disclosure" during the investigation. The breaches included "an undisclosed payment made to a player; pre-payments from the club to players; and payments made by the club to agents of the players", and all related to the 2005-06 season. Striker David Zdrilic is strongly implicated in the scandal, allegedly centred around payments made to his agent Alan McGrouther. The penalty, pending appeal, will drop Sydney from second to third position on the ladder. [FFA][FS]¤ 01 January 2007: Sydney FC vs Newcastle United Jets FC, EnergyAustralia Stadium, 6:00pm (A-League - Rd 18) Sydney FC regain second spot on New Year's Day following their points deduction, defeating Newcastle United in their first home match after five games on the road. The 2-0 win is Sydney's ninth consecutive undefeated match, and fifth consecutive clean sheet, won with a clever team goal to Alex Brosque shortly after half-time and a long-range lob by Sasho Petrovski in injury time. The 20,980 crowd is a Newcastle football record, surpassing the 1955 attendance of 18,517 for Australia vs Rapid Vienna. [A-L][A-L][NUJ]Sydney FC 2 (Brosque 46', Petrovski 90+1') def. Carbone had previously expressed his desire to return to Sydney FC, but Perry says the gap between Carbone's asking price and what the club was prepared to pay is too high. [SMH][FS][FS]¤ 10 November 2006: Sydney FC vs New Zealand Knights FC, Aussie Stadium, 8:00pm (A-League - Rd 12) David Carney makes a timely return from injury, scoring a goal as Sydney take their first win in six matches and score more than two goals at Aussie Stadium for the first time since game #1 there, against New Zealand in the 2005 Pre-Season Cup.
